A cracked dome is the obvious case. More often the plastic or glass is fine and the metal around the curb has pulled away from the tile course. Deck-mounted and curb-mounted roof windows need different flashings, and both have to be woven back into concrete or clay tile.

Should I tar the skylight?
Coating the glass or the tile hides the curb and makes the next repair harder. Catch the water inside and call.
Is a yellow ceiling always the skylight?
Not always. A pipe boot upslope can drip and the water exits at the skylight shaft because that is a low opening in the drywall.
Do you replace the skylight?
If the frame is rotten or the unit is cracked through, replacement is part of stopping the leak. If the flashing failed, we repair the flashing.
